Dear Directors,
As you've hopefully been aware we have been working towards a renovation
project focussed in the WCs, creating a more accessible and baby change
friendly WC, a safer accessed store for the bar and also replacing the
rotten decking in the garden.
The agreed design can be downloaded here:
https://cloud.cubecinema.com/s/building?path=%2F
The ambulant disabled WC has the potential to become a full wheelchair
accessible as it meets the space requirements and can be level from the bar
by raising the floor to bar level, moving the steps in the corridor and
enlarging the doorway. It was decided this was an unnecessary expense at
this stage as the rest of the building has several major access challenges
which are not practically resolvable.
*The summary of quotes for the building work* are as follows:
- *Electrics £3882*
- *Plumbing £7293.62*
- *Building work* (including laying blockwork to replace decking) (£9505
+VAT)* £11,406*
*Trades subTOTAL: £22,581.62*
Full quotations can be found here:
https://cloud.cubecinema.com/s/building?path=%2FQuotes
A few notes on the quotations:
All prices include 20% VAT
Disposal of sanitaryware will be by vols to keep costs down.
Am sourcing free recycled driveway blocks for the garden in red herringbone
to echo the buildings aesthetic. Cost to lay them has been quoted by the
builder. *Please let me know if there is any practical reason decking was
used in those areas *ie access to drains etc*. *
Allow additional £1500 for joinery and painting supplies (voluntary labour).
Allow £400 for bar store shelving.
https://www.bigdug.co.uk/clearance-special-offers-c82640/mega-deals-c411/sh…
Allowance required for tiling project and installation.. areas TBC
(guessing about £1-2k).
Flooring hopefully donated heavy duty paint and LVT for the store.
Following this up.
*Total will be around the £26k mark.*
I'm really happy with these figures but I appreciate they can seem really
daunting if folk aren't used to the cost of employing trades.
Please confirm these works can go ahead as soon as possible so I can
confirm and book the trades, hopefully by Monday.
Any questions do call/ ask.
Many thanks,
Jo

Hello all,
can we get a consensus on 'Spend A Penny' spend. Jo is asking for us to
agree it as the MH board, good to support with this. Some funding
applications will ask for this, i.e. should we be successful in our
revised application for the Green Energy Grant, it will be signed by me.
MH (and Cube) can cope with the spend. Just spoke to Helen (bookkeeper)
today, she is confident looking at historic data. Cube has some historic
money owed that can be donated towards this fund. I'll update on this
after our Friday meeting.
Helen has also suggested we have our MH AGM soon, she is aligning the
data now. I will check in with Ryan regarding his availability, we are
suggesting week of July 15th, so we can announce with a 2 week lead-in
and do before school hols. Let me know how you are fixed, can do online
if not in-person. x

Hi David, Thanks for taking this in hand.
Have tweaked a few things to focus more on the energy efficiency and
less on the accessibility (which we'll have improved but not to the
extent that we'll have level access to the bar. This was decided against
until we resolve the level access throughout the building (if we ever
can). The new accessible WC and steps can be altered in the future to be
level with the bar and the room is sized to accommodate wheelchairs
when/if that does happen. Probably at a cost of about another £7/8k
ish).
# Spend a Penny
We are refurbishing the Cube's toilets over our August closure to make
them less janky, more accessible and better for the environment.
## What we're doing
### Making our toilets more pleasant and efficient
We're making significant improvements to the quality of our toilets -
highlights will include:
- eco cisterns that fill in less than 15 mins and use less water
- seats that aren't hanging off
- hand dryers that actually dry your hands
- energy efficient lighting and better ventilation
- baby change facilities
- full redecoration
### Improving accessibility and inclusivity
Our building is more than 100 years old, and a century of remodels and
changes of use have made it very poor for accessibility. When we bought
our building we committed to improving things, and we stand by that
commitment.
We previously worked with architects to try to resolve these issues but
the building quotes we got were significantly higher than anticipated
(£1 million+) and the changes just weren't feasible. As a result of
this, we're aiming to make more appropriate improvements over time.
As part of this phase we're going to:
- create a new ambulant-accessible toilet
- install new hand rails on our stairs
- reconfigure gender neutral WCs and urinals
- build a beer store with safer access for our volunteers
### Increasing our energy efficiency
Our water heater is a hulking beast from the distant past. It takes up a
lot of space and burns through an obscene amount of energy for the
relatively small amount of hot water we use. We are replacing it with a
more efficient model and reducing our carbon footprint.
All new plumbing has water conservation in mind.
## How you can help
The main challenge to this is funding - although the volunteers are
putting in as many hours as is feasible, the works will also require
specialist building, plumbing, tiling and electrical work. You can
[donate to the campaign online]
(this page is still from the building buy 10 years ago so ignore the
£200k total on the counter - we're working on it!). Our target for
these works is £28k.
You can also donate via cash or card in the bar.
We're open to other fundraising ideas like raffles or events - email
blueprint(a)cubecinema.com if you think you can help with this.

Do you want before and after drawings to illustrate what we're up to?
Maybe a gif?

Hi Jo
Good question
I just created a mailing list called microplex(a)cubecinema.com
containing
Kate Rich <kate(a)irational.org>
Chiz Williams <edenshalf(a)gmail.com>
Kari Nygard <kari(a)cubecinema.com>
Dave Taylor-Matthews <evadrolyat(a)gmail.com>
Graeme Hogg <graemehogg(a)pi.irational.org>
David Hopkinson <mr_hopkinson(a)hotmail.com>
Robbie Warin <robbiewarin(a)gmail.com>
and myself
these being the names on the AR30 form for 31/03/2023 downloaded from
https://mutuals.fca.org.uk/Search/Society/6506
If this list is out-of-date, I dare say people will let me know.
Best
Marcus
